This is what I start with, before the sculpture is cast into plaser. What a mess. You can see that I've sketched out some scale patterns, which I promptly carved off again.I always do that.Notice also that both front feet are down- there just wasn't room for both , so I lifted one up in the final version. It is made out of 'Critter Clay'

Again, nice to see the work in progress before the finished piece. He does have a bit of a different facial expression it seems. Though that could be just due to his ’raw’ state. And he does look rather fearsome...or smug...one of the two....either way, he’s a looker (and it looks like he knows it!)

:-) Melody Pena replies: "The sculptures change allot during the process of refining. sometimes I like the rough original more than the finished thing. Thank you for the comment!"

can you do step by step tutorials on how you made it please

:-) Melody Pena replies: "This sculpture was made with a water based clay called "critter clay" clay. It was sculpted into this shape using ceramic modeling tools , hands, and mallets to pound it around. I started with full blocks of clay and cut the basic shape with a wire clay tool, then built the smaller details onto that basic shape. This clay dragon is not meant to be fired, so I didn’t worry about making it hollow. "

Wow this is so good! Im planning on making a sculpture of a dragon myself, and this is very inspirational! Although mine wont turn out this good, i want to make Saphira from eragon since i love the series. You’re very talented and i see that people buy your work? If you did i would love to buy this one bu i live in Australia so i probably wouldnt be able to get it. Keep up the great work!

:-) Melody Pena replies: "Thank you!
well, not to turn this into a commercial but we do ship worldwide!
-I cringe at what this one would cost to ship though!"

im used to making sculptures in an hour, not a week! i dont have any Tupperware big enough to put anything in. i got clay and 26gauge wire today! YAY!!! lol11

:-) Melody Pena replies: "This scupture took two YEARS to complete! This is only the first version.

how on earth do you make a huge lump of clay hollow?

:-) Melody Pena replies: "I don’t know how to make this one hollow. That’s the problem. We cast things that are straight with a ruber core which we then remove to leave a hollow, but this sculpture has an "S" shape that prevents the rubber core from being removed easily. It is a problem, because this sculpture weighs 32 pounds!"
