I did a test paint on this new dragon, buy hand painting with brushes. I never hand paint if I can avoid it , but I tried it with  this dragon to see what details take paint well and what needs re-carving.  Wow, does he need lots of things recarved! He is a casting of an original sculpture.

Great piece of work! Love the beutiful eyes! If you could do this all over again, what would you change? I love the way you’ve blended the colors! How did you get the nose so perfect? In your oppinion what stands out most in the sculpture? What materials did you use to create this masterpiece? How did you get the scales just the way you wanted them? What is the mood of the dragon? How did you get it to shine? What about the wings, how did you get them to stay on? (The reason why I asked that last question was because I can never get my sculptures to stay together without hurting the detail.) And lastly, what were you thinking of when you sculpted this piece?

:-) Melody Pena replies: " For some reason I was not emailed your comment when it came.I’m sorry that I am answering this so late, I didn’t intentionally ignore you!
I did change some details that didn’t take paint well, or looked messy. It is easy to overlook these things when working in white plaster, but they show up well when the piece is painted!

The nose is perfect? Well it looks smooth because the colors are close in value so you can’t see the messiness!

The eye stands out most, but I attempt to move your attention around the piece by having other areas almost as bright.

This sculpture was made by sculpting an original out of clay and then making a mold and casting the sculpture in gypsum ( dense plaster). The details were carved in gypsum. The scales were carved out of the gypsum individually .

I got the scales the way I wanted them by trial and error! I often re-do details many times.

The dragon is proud and somewhat egotistical. Like all dragons.

He shines because I used pearly metallic pigments , and a high gloss finish coat.

The wings are cast together in one piece with the dragon so they are very strong.

I squish details too, you aren’t alone.

I thought most about keeping the composition alive, and interesting. It is almost like working out a puzzle to get every element of the dragon to relate to another, somwehow."

*___________* I remember seeing your exquisite sculptures in gift shops when I was a kid! I adore your style! You have such a grasp of animal anatomy, style, detail, and appeal! Your unicorns are my favorite <3!! Now that I’ve got the money, I think I’m finally going to purchase some of your beautiful work!!

:-) Melody Pena replies: " Oh wow, now THAT is a nice comment! Thank you so much!"

Do you mass produce these?
Because I am 100% sure that these are part of the "My Pena" collection created at least 8 years ago that were being sold at Abbington’s Animals and can now be bought at any statue collector’s store 2

:-) Melody Pena replies: "You have a good memory!
This is indeed an M. Pena dragon, though we haven’t sold this particular dragon in stores. He is part of a line of "Paint your own" creatures that you can customize yourself. If you’d like to see more of them, here is the gallery of fabulous, gorgeous, incredible PYO’s painted by Windstone forum members: http://www.windstoneeditions.com/galleries/index.php?cat=1. and the unpainted ones,

Awesome! Thanks.
These are clearly the most beautiful dragons I have ever seen!
Question: Would a tattoo of one of the statues be considered copyright infringement, even if I owned one?

:-) Melody Pena replies: " I’m sorry, I didn’t see your question until now!
I give people permission to use my dragons as tattoos! You can Email me reptangle( at) gmail(dot) com"

I adore the iridescence, the scales are INCREDIBLE, absolutely... stunning. Such a cute expression as well, he looks... slightly hyper

:-) Melody Pena replies: "Hes a little hyper, like a small dog. He looks like he wants to punch someone.
Thank you for visiting!"
