This is a sculpture of one of the characters from my forever unfinished graphic novel. It turns out that Lion-Kirins are a real mythological creature! I didn't know this when I invented this one.It does have feathers though, which is silly, for a real kirin.Gold plated pewter horn.It is an unfinished plaster carving. You can see that the mane still needs detail work.

It was a cool sculpture. I have seen another type of animal it’s called a Pixiu or Pi Yao. It’s not a Kirin and I don’t think your sculpture is either. A Kirin looks more like a unicorn with a dragon like head. Kirin is a Japanese beer and it’s the animal on the label. Your sculpture also is like a griffin which is a winged lion but the head is sometimes more bird like but it has no horn.
To bad it got stolen. The good news is... If your sculpture has the qualities of the Pixiu it will attack whoever stole it since this animal has the power to know who is evil. So it can only bring the fools who stole it very bad luck and will probably kill them.

:-) Melody Pena replies: "You are right, this isn’t really a Kirin, I just call him that for lack of a better name. I made this creature up, then found there are mythical Oriental animal figures with somewhat similar attributes: a lion’s face and body, a horn, (or horns) and wings. "

Just the lion with wings is stunning, but bringing the concept of the Kirin horn into it...wow. Years ago I actually had a story with winged lions called (so originally) Flyions (really creative, isn’t it?). Any chances this one will ever see standard or limited edition production? Either way, he’s a beautiful piece and a wonderfully original concept. There is so much in mythos that exists that it’s impossible to know all of the critters that are out there. It’s only through innovation and inventive artists that some of them are brought to light. You’ve done a spectacular job with this one.

:-) Melody Pena replies: "Thank you so much! I am working slowly on this creature. This original was stolen! We found the rubber mold and were able to pour another rough casting that I have managed to recarve to look almost like this one. So someday we will be able to produce these. I am so glad you like him!"

OK. I know I’m gonna sound really stupid and be embarrassed but what is a Kirin?

:-) Melody Pena replies: "Kirins are mythical deer-like animals often shown with one horn like a unicorn ( though they can have as many as five) they can have hooves or paws , and often have scales on their body.
This one is an original made-up animal that resembles a kirin, becasue of the curved horn, so I called him a lion kirin."Real" Kirins sometimes have wings, but not feathers."

He reminds me more of a Lamasa (Winged Lion, Also the creature in charge of the kindom of forgotten toys in the old christmas movie) I am glad you were able to recast a new one to work on. (Read from the WS Web page) I hope he gets to see production, he’s beautiful.

:-) Melody Pena replies: " This creature is similar to a winged lion, but his face isn’t entirely lion-like. He has deer-like ears and a small muzzle for a lion. He is a composite creature... Oh yes, I still remember that beautiful winged lion king on that Christmas program!
Thank you for visiting!"

Sorry A slight edit to my Post above it’s Lamassu not Lamasa. 8

:-) Melody Pena replies: "Aren’t Lamassu creatures those winged bulls with human heads? I need to google it."

Went away for a while and Didn’t get to Reply. Apparently the Name is applied to Both 22 Being more fantasy based in pretty Creatures I’ll stick with think of it as a Lion!

:-) Melody Pena replies: "Oh yes, he’s much closer to being a lion than anything else. But He also has a horn , feathers and a dished face like a goat... and brown eyes like a deer."
