I'm showing this drawing because it is a great example of something I struggle with constantly when learning to draw different animals. This was done from life, when I was around llamas for the very first time..I tried to get myself to forget, just FORGET, everything I knew about drawing horses, and study how a llama's face worked(the muscles and bones are very different!)..okay..But when I got to the ear I drew a horse-like ear!I tried!Your hands have a mind of their own,and just gotta do what they've learned! Has anyone else experienced this?Oh, and this was drawn at night under a flood light so that the llama's pupils were large and reflected green blue.I enhanced the color in Photoshop. And the fang.(They really do have big fangs!)

Beautiful work even with the horse like ears 1 And yes I know exactly what you mean about drawing what you know instead of what you see at times lol

he looks angry. I actualy work with llamas and was looking for mistakes, I only found two possibilities. Llamas actualy have completely black eyes, like a horses. Also, and I don’t know if this just wasn’t visible in the pic, or if you did it on purpose, or if you didn’t see it, but either way, llamas have teeth on the bottom of their mouth(but not the top, they only need one set for chewing). Either way, this is beatiful and very, very realistic. It reminds me of a llama I love named Xerox. Sorry to be the critic, I can’t help myself!

:-) Melody Pena replies: "The blueish green area on this llama’s eye is actually the pupil wide open. I drew this llama from life at night under a flood light . Their pupils do really open up like that in the dark, and the retinas reflect blue green. The dark spot I drew in the blue area looks as if it is the pupil because I did draw that part wrong intentionally to make him look spooky. This was a young llama whose lower incisors were not yet protuding from his mouth the way more mature llama teeth do. Of course, the fang didn’t realy stick out like that. That IS wrong, and the ears aren’t right. He did have fangs though! Razor sharp too. Thank you for the coment! LLamas are cool."

Muscle-memory is a very annoying problem that probably every artist has ever stuggled with! My suggestion: try drawing a gazillion other things that have absolutely NOTHING in common-- that should get you un-used to drawing in patterns.

:-) Melody Pena replies: "I have also heard that if you draw something upside down you force yourself to actually look at the subject rather than automatically draw it. "

OMGEEEE! YOU HAD THE PATIENCE TO DRAW EVERY LITTLE ONE OF THOSE LINES ON THE FACE!!! I COULDN’T DO THAT IN A MILLION YEARS!!

:-) Melody Pena replies: "sure you could. Try it!"

This is beautifully drawn! The title made me think of the film "The Emperor’s New Groove" when the Emperor gets turned into a llama, there’s a bit where people are shouting "demon llama, demon llama". Anyhow, this really is good. My mum wants to buy a llama but I’m not so sure. At the moment we have sheep and I think llamas and sheep can live together so maybe that would be nice for them. Do you know if llamas get on with horses? My horse loves other animals but they don’t seem to like her!

:-) Melody Pena replies: "Yes horses and llamas get along well, but you need to introduce them carefully. Horses can be afraid of llamas. Llamas usually get along with sheep too, but every llama is an individual. I have had llamas that don’t like sheep, though I think that is rare.Thank yo for the comment! I’d love to know if your Mum really gets a llama!
They are wonderful creatures."

Woa 18 you draw as well! I really loved your llama (personally llama’s always gave me the creeps) well done on the realistic features, wow! Is there any particular reason why the llama seems so angry?

:-) Melody Pena replies: "He is actually not angry at all . When I drew this llama he was happily munching hay. It was at night so I had a flood light shining on his face; that is why his eyes glowed green. I photoshopped in the fang to make him a demon llama. He always was a spitter though."

We have pack llamas. The muscles, lips, nose, & eyelids in your drawing are perfect. The ears certainly can look like this drawing when llamas relax them backward. The males have fighting teeth in exactly the position you’ve drawn the "fang", except that they have them on the top too. Usually they’re sawed off (under anesthesia) at 2-4 years of age. If you leave them, the boys will bite & tear at each other’s ears & other more critical parts. Your drawing is a beautiful rendition of the demon our boys sometimes exhibit when they don’t want to haul weight up a steep hill!

:-) Melody Pena replies: " This guy would of made a great pack llama, he happily would carry anything on his back. But he was just a pet..
Yes, he had a few scars on his ears from play fighting with his brother, before we had everybody’s fangs trimmed!
Thank you for the comment!"

lol i know just what you mean about trying different animal, i immediatly go into horse mode, even with dogs! The detail in the hair is stunning! As if normal llamas were’nt bad enough...i bet this one has toxic spit!

:-) Melody Pena replies: "Llama spit is gastly! Smells like a cistern.
And that is the non- demonic kind."
